…Government Advances Housing, Climate and Urban Reform Agenda

BY MBONO MDLULI

MBABANE Eswatini says it is strengthening its commitment towards sustainable urban development, affordable housing and climate resilience through the implementation of the Africa Urban Forum (AUF 2) Declaration Score Card.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development said the framework is designed to guide the country’s urban transformation agenda while improving the quality of life for citizens across the Kingdom.

Government says the initiative aligns with broader continental and global development goals focused on building resilient, inclusive and sustainable cities.

Focus On Housing, Infrastructure and Climate Resilience

According to the Ministry, the implementation framework outlines several strategic priorities aimed at accelerating urban development and improving living conditions.

Key focus areas include:

  • Integrated housing and urban policy reforms
  • Land and infrastructure development
  • Digital planning systems
  • Climate action initiatives
  • Municipal financing
  • Social housing programmes

Officials said these reforms are intended to support safer and more sustainable communities while responding to growing urbanisation challenges.

The framework also seeks to strengthen planning systems and improve access to housing and basic urban services.

Collaboration Central to Urban Transformation

The Ministry emphasised that cooperation between multiple stakeholders will be critical in ensuring successful implementation of the AUF 2 Declaration Score Card.

The framework promotes collaboration between:

  • Government institutions
  • Municipal authorities
  • Development partners
  • The private sector
  • Local communities

Officials said stronger partnerships would help accelerate progress towards resilient and inclusive cities not only in Eswatini, but across the African continent.

Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development reaffirmed its commitment to advancing people-centred urban transformation aligned with:

  • The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Africa Agenda 2063

Particular emphasis remains on Sustainable Development Goal 11, which focuses on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Government says urban development policies must prioritise:

  • Human dignity
  • Social inclusion
  • Climate resilience
  • Access to quality housing
  • Sustainable infrastructure

Africa Faces Growing Urbanisation Challenges

African countries continue to face increasing pressure linked to:

  • Rapid urban growth
  • Housing shortages
  • Infrastructure demands
  • Climate-related risks
  • Informal settlements

The Africa Urban Forum framework is intended to help countries strengthen urban governance, improve planning systems and promote sustainable development across rapidly expanding cities and communities.

Eswatini says it remains committed to ensuring that urban development contributes directly to economic growth, environmental sustainability and improved living standards for all citizens.
