MANZINI— The Ministry of Education and Training has announced plans to introduce a four-year secondary education structure in 2026, including Competency-Based Education (CBE) across the curriculum to expand access to A-Level and AS-Level qualifications for Emaswati students. The rollout will take place in selected schools identified to offer these post-secondary pathways.
Minister of Education and Training, Owen Nxumalo, made the announcement during the World Teachers’ Day 2025 celebration at Tum’s George Hotel under the theme: “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession.” The event brought together teachers, government officials, and education stakeholders to celebrate educators’ contributions and discuss the future of teaching in the country.
“The four-year CBE curriculum reflects our belief that education must be inclusive, relevant, and empowering,” Nxumalo said. He explained that the reforms are part of the Government Programme of Action for 2024/25 to 2028/29 and aim to better prepare students for global opportunities while improving learning outcomes.
The Minister also highlighted key areas of investment to support the reforms, including AI-powered teacher training platforms to improve digital literacy, smart classrooms with ICT integration, enhanced Technical and Vocational Education and Training programmes, and public-private partnerships to foster innovation and research collaborations.
Nxumalo praised teachers for their vital role in the education system. “You are the heartbeat of our education system. You are not only shaping minds; you are shaping Eswatini,” he said, adding that teachers would be allowed to officially celebrate their day on 24 October 2025.
Principal Secretary Nanikie Mnisi, alongside representatives from teacher organisations, also spoke at the event, commending educators and the government for their continued collaboration in addressing challenges in the education sector.
By combining AI, modern infrastructure, and competency-based learning, the Ministry aims to create a system where teachers are supported, students thrive, and Eswatini’s education sector is ready for the demands of the future.
