EZULWINI – FIFA will provide about E4.1 million annually to support the establishment and operation of a football academy in Eswatini, a move expected to strengthen grassroots football development in the country.

The funding, equivalent to approximately $250,000 per year, forms part of FIFA’s broader initiative to help improve football standards in developing football nations around the world.

The announcement was made by Ali Mwebe during the FIFA Amateur Football Analysis Workshop held at Sibane Sami Hotel. Mwebe is currently in the country facilitating discussions on strengthening football structures and development programmes.

Mwebe explained that once the academy is established, FIFA will provide consistent annual financial support to ensure the programme runs effectively and contributes to the growth of young football talent.

“When you have the football academy, FIFA will provide $250,000 per year. In addition, we will provide a Talent Coach,” he said.

According to Mwebe, the Talent Coach will be a qualified professional, often recruited internationally, who will work directly with players at the academy to nurture their technical skills and develop their potential.

FIFA will cover all expenses related to the coach, including salary, accommodation and transport. The federation will also provide a vehicle to support the coach’s work in developing young footballers.

The initiative forms part of FIFA’s global strategy to strengthen grassroots football and build sustainable talent development pathways in member associations such as the Eswatini Football Association (EFA).

Mwebe noted that the programme is already being implemented in several countries in the region, including South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi. Eswatini is now among the countries expected to benefit from the initiative.

Football development stakeholders believe the academy will create a structured pathway for young players to develop their abilities at an early stage. Over time, the programme is expected to strengthen the country’s national teams and improve their performance in regional and international competitions.

The initiative is seen as a major boost for football development in Eswatini, particularly at grassroots level, where identifying and nurturing young talent remains a key priority for the future of the sport.
