KWALUSENI– Glamour, fashion and celebration filled the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) Sports Emporium on Friday night as new Mr and Miss UNESWA were crowned, with driving scholarships adding an exciting twist to their victory.
The highly anticipated pageant attracted a packed audience of students and members of the public who gathered to witness the crowning of the university’s new campus royalty. The event featured 15 contestants, including 11 female contestants and four male contestants, all competing for the prestigious titles.
When the final results were announced, the venue erupted into cheers and applause as Shlelelwe Dlamini was crowned Mr UNESWA, succeeding outgoing king Sisekelo Motsa, while Blessing Simelane was crowned Miss UNESWA, taking over from outgoing queen Ayanda Shabangu.
Adding more value to their achievement, the newly crowned winners walked away with driving scholarships sponsored by Nhlanez Driving School, worth E4 200. Dlamini received a Heavy Duty driving licence scholarship, while Simelane secured a Light Duty driving licence scholarship.
The pageant began with contestants proudly embracing and showcasing Eswatini’s cultural heritage through traditional attire. The competition later transitioned into the casual wear segment before concluding with a spectacular fashion showcase that captivated the audience and judges alike.
Throughout the evening, contestants were met with enthusiastic support from the crowd. Loud cheers echoed across the Sports Emporium as contestants confidently took to the stage, displaying style, elegance and charisma.
As anticipation for the final announcement intensified, patrons illuminated the venue with their phone flashlights, creating a breathtaking atmosphere that transformed the Sports Emporium into a sea of lights.
Celebrations reached another level after the crowning ceremony, with supporters dancing, singing, applauding and embracing the new titleholders in recognition of their achievement.
Contestant number one, Nokuphiwa Gama, earned the title of Second Princess, while contestant number 40, Wakhile Dlamini, secured the position of Second Prince.
Many attendees described the pageant as one of the university’s most entertaining student events, praising the organisation, fashion displays and the high standard of competition showcased throughout the night.
Students also welcomed the addition of sponsored driving scholarships, viewing them as practical rewards that extend beyond the prestige of wearing the crown. One student, Lungani Shiba, said the initiative could encourage more students to participate in future editions of the pageant.
“I think this initiative will motivate others to take part in the pageant next year because there is something to gain besides the title,” said Shiba.
The event not only crowned new campus royalty but also highlighted how student pageantry continues to evolve by offering opportunities that can positively impact winners long after their reign has ended.
