… Royal clemency announced as Eswatini marks 40 years of King Mswati III’s reign and his 58th birthday

MATSAPHA– Scores of deserving inmates could soon be given a second chance at life after His Majesty King Mswati III announced that offenders who meet the required criteria will benefit from the Royal Prerogative of Mercy as Eswatini continues celebrating two historic national milestones.
The announcement was made during the 18th Correctional Services Day celebrations held at the Matsapha Correctional Services College on Friday, where the King addressed correctional officers, government officials, members of the judiciary, diplomats and invited guests.
His Majesty revealed that the granting of clemency forms part of the Kingdom’s celebrations of the 40th anniversary of his coronation and his 58th birthday, describing the occasion as an opportunity to extend mercy to deserving offenders while promoting rehabilitation and social reintegration.
The King directed correctional authorities and other law enforcement agencies to work together in identifying inmates who may qualify for parole or clemency during the commemorative period.
The announcement was welcomed as a demonstration of compassion and rehabilitation-focused justice, providing hope to offenders who have shown genuine reform while serving their sentences.
Beyond the clemency announcement, His Majesty paid tribute to members of His Majesty’s Correctional Services for their dedication, discipline and commitment to national service.
He praised correctional officers for maintaining high standards of professionalism, noting that their responsibilities require them to be physically fit, emotionally resilient and spiritually grounded.
According to the King, correctional officers play a critical role not only in maintaining security but also in helping transform the lives of offenders entrusted to their care.
His Majesty emphasised the importance of spiritual guidance within correctional institutions, commending religious leaders who provide counselling, prayer and moral support to both officers and inmates.
He noted that strong spiritual values contribute to a healthy correctional environment and assist offenders in rebuilding their lives.
The King further applauded the rehabilitation programmes being implemented across correctional facilities, saying they continue to equip inmates with practical skills that can help them become productive citizens upon release.
Among the programmes highlighted were vocational training initiatives in construction, agriculture and other trades designed to prepare offenders for economic participation and self-reliance.
The King acknowledged that correctional institutions often face operational challenges but assured personnel of Government’s continued support in strengthening rehabilitation programmes and improving service delivery.
He reiterated Government’s commitment to ensuring that correctional services continue fulfilling their mandate of offender rehabilitation, public safety and national development.
The annual Correctional Services Day celebrates the contribution of correctional officers to national security and recognises their role in transforming offenders into responsible and productive members of society.
This year’s celebrations carried added significance as the Kingdom commemorates two landmark occasions in the nation’s history, with the Royal Prerogative of Mercy expected to bring renewed hope to deserving inmates and their families.
