MATSAPHA– His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) marked its 18th anniversary celebrations with a significant gift to Their Majesties, presenting five cattle and two vans loaded with fresh vegetables.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Prince Simelane, who said the gift comprised three cattle for His Majesty King Mswati III and two cattle for Her Majesty the Indlovukazi. The cattle were accompanied by two vans full of vegetables produced through HMCS agricultural projects.
The presentation was one of the highlights of the anniversary celebrations, held under the theme, “Advancing Rehabilitation and Institutional Excellence Under His Majesty’s Leadership.” The gift symbolised the institution’s appreciation for the guidance and leadership of Their Majesties, while also showcasing the success of correctional rehabilitation programmes.
Prince Simelane commended the Government of Eswatini for its continued contribution to national development through offender rehabilitation, skills development and food production initiatives.
Government remains committed to supporting the institution through legislative and financial assistance to ensure it effectively carries out its mandate of safe custody, rehabilitation and successful reintegration of offenders into society.
The Minister noted that Government support extends to vocational and technical training programmes, including agriculture, baking, building and industrial arts, which equip inmates with practical skills for life after incarceration. He also highlighted developmental services such as education, counselling and chaplaincy programmes that contribute to offender transformation.
Despite the progress achieved, Prince Simelane acknowledged challenges facing the institution, including limited transport resources, the need for additional vehicles, and the rehabilitation and upgrading of correctional facilities.
