HLATHIKHULU– True love often hides in plain sight, and for Xolile Hlophe and Khaya Mazibuko, it was waiting right inside a lifelong friendship.
This past weekend, the Mazibuko family was filled with joy as the two tied the knot through the sacred custom of Kuteka. Their story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes the person you’ve been looking for is the one who has been standing by your side all along.
The journey to the altar was anything but a straight line. Hlophe laughingly recalls how she initially placed Khaya firmly in the “friend zone.” For years, whenever he approached her asking for love, she would simply tell him he wasn’t her type. While she searched elsewhere for her ideal partner, Mazibuko remained her rock, proving that patience and genuine support are the ultimate keys to a woman’s heart.
“I got married to my male bestie. We were friends for so long. He was so smart for maintaining his position of being my friend; he learned exactly how I love to be loved,” Hlophe noted. By staying close, Mazibuko became her biggest cheerleader. This is most evident in her professional life, as Hlophe is widely known for her incredible handwork and artistry through Ulamgangela Creations. Khaya is a constant fixture at her business stalls, getting along famously with customers while supporting her craft.
While Hlophe thrives as a creative entrepreneur, Khaya is equally successful as the founder of Zibs Construction Services, making them a formidable and hardworking team. Adding to the magic of their union is a rare and special connection: they are birthday twins. Both were born on May 22, 1990, and have spent their lives celebrating this milestone together. This shared destiny made their transition from best friends to life partners feel like it was always meant to be.
When asked about their view on love, the couple shared a perspective built on time and trust. “Love is about finding someone who supports your dreams and knows your heart before they even know your hand in marriage,” they shared. For those finding it hard to find love, their advice is simple: “Don’t rush the process or look too far away. Sometimes, the love you need is already in your life, disguised as a friendship that just needs time to grow.”
The decision to marry through the Kuteka ceremony was a beautiful tribute to family and respect. Although they initially planned an English-style wedding, they chose to honor the wishes of Khaya’s father. “When we asked for his blessings, he gave us and asked us to do the Kuteka way,” the couple said. With Hlophe hailing from Nhlangano and Khaya from Hlathikhulu, the event concluded as a vibrant celebration of heritage, proving that when friendship turns into love, it creates a bond that is truly unbreakable.
