MALKERNS – The countdown to the 2026 Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival is heating up, and food lovers are in for a feast unlike any other as three of Africa’s most celebrated chefs prepare to light up the festival with mouth-watering dishes, captivating stories and unforgettable live cooking performances.

Set for August 1 and 2 at the iconic House on Fire in Malkerns, this year’s festival promises to be a spectacular celebration of African food, culture, fashion and music, with the culinary stage expected to be one of the biggest crowd-pullers.

Under the theme “Nguni Foodways,” festivalgoers will witness traditional African recipes transformed into modern masterpieces while discovering the rich history behind ingredients that have nourished generations across the continent.

Leading the star-studded culinary line-up is renowned heritage chef, filmmaker and cultural archivist Prince Sivalo Mahlangu, whose work has earned admiration across Africa for preserving indigenous food traditions through his popular platform, Magriza Made Me Cook.

His live showcase, Ancestral Forage & Ferments, promises far more than a cooking demonstration. Audiences will be taken on a fascinating journey into Africa’s culinary past, exploring ancient preservation techniques, wild indigenous ingredients and traditional cooking methods that have stood the test of time.

With storytelling woven into every dish, Mahlangu aims to remind audiences that African food is not simply about satisfying hunger—it is a powerful expression of history, identity and cultural pride.

Adding a touch of sophistication to the festival is acclaimed South African chef Mmabatho Molefe, whose award-winning restaurant, Emazulwini, has become synonymous with elegant African fine dining.

Her presentation, Nguni Fine Dining Experience, will showcase how indigenous African cuisine can be elevated into world-class gourmet dishes without sacrificing its authentic flavours and traditions.

Molefe’s creative approach has earned her recognition as one of Africa’s most exciting culinary innovators, blending storytelling, heritage and refined cooking techniques to create unforgettable dining experiences.

Flying Eswatini’s flag high is award-winning young chef Sive Bhembe, one of the country’s fastest-rising culinary stars.

Bhembe has already built an impressive reputation through victories and accolades in the LUJU Farm-to-Fork MasterChef Cook-Off, the TAVI Indigenous Vegetable National Competition, and for contributing to the TAVI Indigenous Cookbook.

His exciting presentation, Nguni Desserts, will reveal how traditional African ingredients can be transformed into elegant contemporary desserts, giving festivalgoers a fresh appreciation of indigenous flavours while proving that African cuisine can be just as innovative as it is authentic.

Organisers say the culinary programme has been carefully curated to entertain, educate and inspire visitors of all ages while celebrating the richness of African knowledge and sustainable food systems.

Beyond the live cooking shows, visitors can expect an unforgettable weekend packed with premium food experiences, music performances, fashion showcases, cultural exhibitions and family entertainment.

Over the years, the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival has grown into one of Southern Africa’s most anticipated lifestyle events, attracting thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond.

This year’s edition is expected to continue that tradition by bringing together celebrated chefs, talented local producers, artists and cultural ambassadors in a vibrant showcase of African excellence.

For aspiring chefs, food enthusiasts and lovers of African culture, the festival offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from culinary masters while experiencing the flavours, traditions and creativity that continue to place African cuisine on the global stage.

When the fires are lit at House on Fire this August, visitors can expect far more than delicious food—they can look forward to an unforgettable celebration where every recipe tells a story, every ingredient carries history, and every bite celebrates the spirit of Africa.
