MBABANE – A brighter future is taking shape in Eswatini’s towns as the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has launched a major project to transform informal settlements into proper urban neighborhoods.
The initiative is in direct response to a call made by His Majesty King Mswati III during the opening of the Second Session of the 12th Parliament in february this year. On August 19, 2025, while addressing residents of Macambeni in Pigg’s Peak, Minister of Housing and Urban Development Apollo Maphalala reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving lives through better housing and infrastructure.
Minister Maphalala explained that the project is not only about upgrading slums but about giving Emaswati the dignity of secure homes, where children can grow up in safe, nurturing environments. “When children are raised in proper homes, they are better prepared to become responsible and productive citizens,” he said.
The Minister also encouraged Macambeni residents to embrace the shift from informal living to recognized urban settlement standards. He emphasized the importance of obtaining proper plots and title deeds, ensuring that families can enjoy the full security of property ownership.
Government, he assured, will play its part in supporting residents with costly infrastructure needs. He cited the example of Nhlangano, where sewer installation cost nearly E300 million, highlighting the scale of investment required to improve urban services.
At the same time, Maphalala called for honesty and diligence in the process, urging all involved to put community interests first. “This project must benefit residents directly, not individuals seeking to enrich themselves at the expense of others,” he said.
The Minister also conveyed apologies on behalf of Pigg’s Peak MP and Speaker of the House of Assembly, Jabulani Mabuza, who was unable to attend but pledged to join future engagements with residents.
Through this initiative, the Ministry is giving new hope to urban communities, ensuring that families live with dignity, security, and access to essential services.
