LOBAMBA – Several Members of Parliament have called on Government to ensure that electricity prices remain stable in order to protect households and support the growth of small businesses across the country.

The concerns were raised during the debate on the Annual Performance Report of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy in the Senate on Friday, March 6, 2026. The Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, HRH Prince Lonkhokhela, presented the 2025/26 Annual Performance Report as part of the process of seeking Parliament’s approval for the Ministry’s proposed 2026/27 budget allocation.

During the debate, legislators used the platform to highlight key issues affecting their constituencies while also supporting Government’s efforts to strengthen service delivery.

Among the Members of Parliament who contributed to the discussion were Mafutseni MP Sabelo Mtsetfwa, Ndzingeni MP Gcina Magagula and Matsanjeni South MP Sabelo Ndlangamandla. The MPs emphasised the importance of keeping electricity tariffs affordable, noting that electricity is a basic service that plays a vital role in the daily lives of emaSwati.

They explained that stable electricity prices would support families while also helping small businesses and emerging entrepreneurs continue operating successfully. Many small enterprises rely heavily on electricity to run equipment, preserve goods and provide services to their communities.

The legislators highlighted that protecting these businesses contributes positively to economic growth and job creation, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas where small businesses are often the backbone of local economies.

In addition to electricity matters, the MPs also encouraged Government to accelerate the implementation of borehole projects in communities that continue to experience water shortages. They noted that improving access to reliable water sources would greatly enhance the quality of life for many residents.

According to the MPs, boreholes can provide a sustainable solution for communities where access to clean and reliable water remains limited. They added that improving water availability would also support agricultural activities and community development.

The legislators further raised the issue of land disputes that occasionally arise in some constituencies. They encouraged Government to continue strengthening land administration systems and implementing policies aimed at resolving disputes peacefully and efficiently.

They noted that effective land management promotes stability within communities and creates an environment that encourages development and investment.

Overall, the debate reflected Parliament’s commitment to working together with Government to ensure that national policies respond to the needs of the people.

By prioritising affordable electricity, reliable water access and improved land management, MPs expressed confidence that Government programmes would continue to uplift communities and support sustainable development across Eswatini.
