MANZINI – A free cancer screening drive targeting senior citizens has shattered expectations, with over 300 pensioners screened in June alone.
The initiative, led by OncAura Wellness Centre (formerly Swaziland Radiology Services), focused on early detection of prostate, cervical, and breast cancer among people aged 60 and above.
Launched in June 2025, the campaign reached and exceeded its target within weeks.
Speaking after the milestone, OncAura’s Chief Operations Officer for Radiotherapy Services, Lindiwe Fokazi, described the campaign as a win for preventative healthcare in Eswatini.
“Early detection significantly improves outcomes. This wasn’t just about screenings, it was also about educating pensioners to take charge of their wellbeing,” she said.
Fokazi said the overwhelming turnout proved that the elderly are eager for healthcare access when barriers are removed.
“The response shows that pensioners want to be seen, supported, and informed. This campaign uncovered a huge gap in access for the elderly that cannot be ignored,” she added.
The success of the campaign has bolstered support for the soon-to-open OncAura Wellness Centre, currently under construction at the Philani Centre in Manzini.
The facility is expected to bring world-class cancer treatment to local and regional patients, saving lives and reducing costly referrals abroad.
Fokazi said once the final report is compiled, OncAura will engage local specialists, including gynaecologists and urologists, for integrated disclosure and follow-up care.
“We’re working to build a stronger referral network that ensures no patient is left behind after screening,” she said.
Eswatini faces one of the highest cervical cancer rates in the world, with 84.5 cases per 100 000 women, many detected late due to limited screening access. Fokazi said this made the campaign’s timing critical.
“Cancer doesn’t wait for a referral or a payday. We need more preventative drives like this, accessible, inclusive, and ongoing.”
OncAura has now expanded its screening services to include colorectal and lung cancer, and welcomes both pensioners and paying clients. Appointments can be booked via 7802 9604 or 7802 2842.
