MBABANE – Swati artist Sancheziey underwent the Kubutseka on April 12, 2026, at KaMgadlela Engabezweni Royal Kraal, marking a transformative moment in his journey as an Umgidvo musician.
Rooted in the sounds of Umgidvo, Sancheziey has always positioned himself as a cultural storyteller. However, his recent Kubutseka experience marks a powerful transition one that goes beyond performance and into lived tradition. For the artist, this was not merely ceremonial, but a spiritual awakening that connects him directly to his ancestors and strengthens the authenticity behind his craft.
“Undergoing Kubutseka means I am no longer just singing about tradition I am living it,” he shared, emphasizing how the process has given his voice truth and deeper meaning.
The decision to undergo Kubutseka was driven by what he describes as a personal calling. As an artist representing Swazi culture, he felt compelled to fully immerse himself in the customs he so passionately expresses through music. This journey, he says, allows him to create from a place of lived experience rather than observation.
Since becoming part of Umbutfo, Sancheziey describes his journey as both humbling and transformative. The process has instilled discipline, pride, and a heightened sense of responsibility. Carrying not only his personal brand but also the weight of cultural representation, his music has evolved now richer in depth, strength, and purpose.
A defining moment during the Kubutseka ceremony was the receiving of his warrior name,“The name I received during Kubutseka is ‘Gandz’ Umjono,’ and it represents the effort, discipline, and commitment I have shown throughout my journey,” he said. “It is not just a name, but a sacred part of my identity that reflects who I am and the path I have chosen as a cultural warrior.”
He added that the name serves as a reminder of his growth and responsibility: “I hold it with great honor and respect because it reflects my character, my journey, and the spirit I carry as both an artist and a member of Umbutfo.” He said.
Looking ahead, the artist remains committed to preserving Swazi traditions by living out the values instilled in him and using his music as a tool to educate and inspire.
