SITEKI – David Banele Mthembu, a 29-year-old tailor hailing from Lubombo Siteki, is a rising star in the fashion industry with a passion for creating vintage wear and elegant dresses that suit any occasion, including work. Despite his shy and private demeanor, Banele’s talent shines through in his work, captivating clients seeking classy yet simple designs.

Educated at Siteki Nazarene High School for his secondary education and later at Lechwelight High School for his senior years, Banele’s journey into tailoring began in 2019. Reflecting on his inspiration, he humbly states, “Nothing inspired me to be a tailor; I woke up one day and decided to be one.” To hone his skills, he attended the National Handcraft Training in Ezulwini in 2018, solidifying his foundation in the craft.

With six years of experience under his belt, Banele’s career faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, yet he persevered, showcasing his determination and commitment to his artistry. Among his most iconic works is a collaboration with Benanile Maphanga, a renowned neckpiece designer. This partnership offered clients complimentary neckpieces from Maphanga when purchasing a dress from Banele, marking a creative synergy that delighted fashion enthusiasts.

Another standout moment in Banele’s career was his collaboration with music producer, Umuti formerly known as Mozaik (Muzi Ngwenya), where he designed what he referred to as the “spirit outfit.” This project allowed him to showcase his creativity while connecting with a broader audience.

Emphasizing the intimacy of his craft, Banele expresses his aspirations, saying, “I want to be like Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton — a limited edition.” His approach to tailoring reflects a deep appreciation for quality and uniqueness, making his pieces highly sought after.

Banele primarily connects with clients through his Facebook page, where they can inquire about his services via direct messages or referrals from previous customers. This direct line of communication fosters a personal relationship, ensuring that each client feels valued and understood.+

To aspiring tailors, Banele offers sage advice: “Forget about money; focus on self-development, forget about society, and perfect your craft.” His words highlight the importance of passion and skill over immediate financial gain, encouraging young creatives to dedicate themselves to their artistry.

Currently, Banele is working on an exciting new piece, a surprise he eagerly promises to share with Eswatini Positive News. As he continues to grow and evolve in his profession, Banele Mthembu stands as a testament to the power of determination and creativity in the world of fashion.
