MBABANE – World Vision Eswatini National Director Amos Zaindi recently visited two families affected by heavy rains in Mhlangatane, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities beyond immediate emergency response.
The National Director was accompanied by the Humanitarian Emergency Affairs team, which delivered relief items including mattresses, food, and other essential household supplies. The assistance brought immediate relief to the affected families whose homes and livelihoods were damaged by the floods.
Beyond the distribution of aid, the visit provided an opportunity for the organisation to assess the full extent of the damage and to engage directly with families and local authorities. Zaindi listened to community members as they shared the ongoing challenges they face following the extreme weather conditions.
Local authorities expressed concern over increasingly unpredictable weather patterns in the area. They reported that prolonged rainfall destroyed most crops, wiping out the season’s harvest. Efforts by families to replant were unsuccessful after the rains suddenly stopped and were followed by extreme heat, which has further damaged crops still in the fields.
The rapid shift from flooding to intense heat has heightened fears of food insecurity, particularly among households already living in fragile conditions with limited means to recover from repeated shocks.
In response, Zaindi reaffirmed World Vision Eswatini’s commitment to continue supporting government efforts and to work closely with stakeholders to identify sustainable medium- to long-term solutions. These include interventions aimed at strengthening community resilience, protecting livelihoods, and reducing vulnerability to future climate-related disasters.
World Vision Eswatini remains focused on both emergency response and long-term development, ensuring that children and families are better equipped to withstand the impacts of climate change and build more secure and resilient futures.
