EZULWINI — EU Ambassador to Eswatini, Karsten Mecklenburg, has urged journalists in Eswatini to prioritise fact-based reporting as a powerful tool to safeguard democracy and strengthen public trust.
Speaking during the World Press Freedom Day commemoration at Happy Valley Hotel in Ezulwini, the Ambassador explained the critical role of credible journalism in today’s fast-evolving information landscape.
“Free, independent, and pluralistic media is the backbone of democracy and a vital public good which we should all protect and defend,” he said.
He stressed that journalism anchored on facts and evidence is essential in countering the rise of misinformation and disinformation, particularly on social media platforms.
“Facts- and evidence-based journalism is important to counter dis- and misinformation, thus ensuring that citizens enjoy their rights to accessing credible and accurate information,” he said.
The Ambassador warned that misinformation has the potential to derail progress on human rights and inclusive development, noting that it can reverse gains made in tackling poverty and inequality.
Highlighting the broader democratic role of the media, he added: “A free, independent, and pluralistic media helps to provide information required for citizens to hold their leaders accountable.”
While acknowledging the challenges facing the media industry, including financial sustainability and pressure from digital platforms, he praised journalists for their resilience and ethical commitment.
“I really admire your dedication to this job… you want to hold government accountable, and this is important,” he said.
He reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting press freedom globally, including efforts to protect journalists and promote a fair and enabling media environment.
In closing, the Ambassador encouraged local journalists to remain steadfast in upholding press freedom and delivering credible information, describing their role as essential in shaping a transparent, accountable, and inclusive society.
