MBABANE – The familiar paper receipt handed over after a purchase could soon become part of the past as Eswatini embraces a new digital era where transactions are recorded, secured and verified electronically through the Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS) E-Invoicing System.
The new system, also known as Fiscalization, is set to transform the way businesses issue invoices and how consumers interact with proof of purchase. It is designed to make everyday transactions easier, improve transparency and strengthen trust between businesses, consumers and the tax administration.
For a small business owner keeping piles of receipts, a retailer managing thousands of daily transactions, or a customer searching for proof of purchase after losing a paper receipt, the digital invoicing system brings a simpler and more efficient solution.
Speaking during ERS Tax Talk, ERS Director of Marketing and Communications Ntobeko Manana explained that the initiative is part of the organisation’s journey towards using technology to improve taxpayer services.
“The invoicing system does not change business operations, but it will help businesses reduce compliance efforts, minimise errors and make transaction reporting more efficient,” said Manana.
The system will enable businesses to capture transactions digitally at the point of sale and securely transmit information to ERS in real or near real time. It will support different sectors, including retail stores, wholesalers, supermarkets, e-commerce businesses and other enterprises using point-of-sale systems, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platforms, mobile applications and web-based invoicing solutions.
Beyond simplifying reporting, the system is expected to provide businesses with secure and easily searchable digital records. This will help improve accounting processes, support faster audits, strengthen cash flow management and reduce disputes caused by missing or inconsistent invoices.
Consumers will also experience a new level of confidence when making purchases. Each electronic invoice will contain a QR code that customers can scan using a smartphone to confirm whether the invoice is authentic. This will provide customers with reliable proof of purchase when handling returns, warranties or complaints.
ERS highlighted that the new invoicing system will complement existing digital platforms such as TaxEase rather than replace them. TaxEase will continue supporting taxpayer registration, filing of returns and tax payments, while the new system will strengthen compliance monitoring and improve future tax administration processes.
As the country prepares for this digital shift, ERS will continue engaging businesses and stakeholders through workshops, information sessions and awareness campaigns to ensure a smooth transition.
The organisation has encouraged taxpayers to continue using current ERS platforms and await official communication on the rollout of the new invoicing system.
With every scan, click and digital receipt, Eswatini is moving closer to a future where technology makes business easier, strengthens accountability and creates a more transparent economy for all.
