MBABANE– Organisations have been urged to continuously monitor and assess emerging risks to strengthen their ability to respond to disruptions, with Johnstone, GRC SME Lead, making the call during a three-day Governance, Performance, Risk and Compliance (GPRC) workshop that concluded at Hilton Garden Inn, Mbabane, today.

The workshop, held from September 15 to 17, 2026, brought together stakeholders to examine emerging GPRC trends and ways organisations can strengthen governance, risk management, compliance and performance.

Johnstone said traditional enterprise risk management, which often involves quarterly or annual assessments, was no longer sufficient in a changing business environment.

“We need to be continuously assessing our risk,” he said.

He explained that organisations should continuously update their enterprise risk information, monitor their level of exposure and assess the effectiveness of activities put in place to address identified risks.

According to Johnstone, this approach allows organisations to move away from simply checking or evaluating risks at specific intervals towards continuously monitoring their risk environment.

The discussions also highlighted business resilience and continuity as important elements of effective risk management.

Johnstone said organisations needed to strengthen their ability to respond and adapt to disruptions by having appropriate business continuity plans, capabilities and skills.

He also emphasised the importance of top management in ensuring successful GPRC implementation, particularly through providing the resources needed to establish and sustain the necessary systems and processes.

Staff capacity was also identified as an important component, with employees needing training to effectively use the systems and understand the processes being implemented.

Johnstone further stressed that automation alone could not solve organisational challenges, noting that organisations needed appropriate processes and information in place before automating areas such as business continuity and strategy.

The workshop concluded with an emphasis on continuous improvement, with organisations encouraged to keep evaluating their practices, identify areas requiring improvement and strengthen their preparedness for emerging risks.

The approach can help organisations remain informed about their risk exposure, improve resilience and respond more effectively to changes and disruptions.
