MBABANE – Eswatini is ranked the 11th most visited country in Africa in 2026.
In the latest rankings published by Shore Africa, Eswatini is typically ranked just outside the top 10 most visited countries in Africa, often placing in the 11th to 15th range on the continent.
“However, the kingdom remains a heavyweight in regional travel, heavily relying on cross-border traffic from South Africa and Mozambique,” the report states.
According to the online publication, the Kingdom of Eswatini’s tourism has bounced back strongly, recently recording a significant 11.8% year-on-year surge in international arrivals (over 177,182 visitors) during just the first two months of 2026.
“The vast majority of tourists hail from the SADC region, with neighboring South Africa and Mozambique leading regional arrivals.”
On the broader continental scale, countries with massive historical and leisure appeal (such as Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa) command the highest raw numbers. Eswatini is categorised in a different tier that emphasises intimate cultural experiences and proximity to neighboring destinations.
The Kingdom of Eswatini is said to have hit a milestone by welcoming one million international visitors, consolidating its status as a major regional tourism hub. The sector’s momentum continues into 2026, with the country recording impressive double-digit growth in international arrivals during the early months of the year.
“Eswatini does not compete in the massive 100+ million figures claimed by global tourism giants like France or the United States. Instead, it shines as a premier, culturally rich destination in Southern Africa,” states the publication.
Eswatini saw a 7.9% increase in arrivals in January and an impressive 16.3% year-on-year surge in February.
Neighboring SADC countries account for over 88% of total arrivals. Mozambique and South Africa drive the bulk of regional volume according to the statistics.
Eswatini has been experiencing a massive tourism surge, with visitor arrivals soaring. The country recorded hundreds of thousands of international arrivals—including over 92,000 visitors in January alone—marking an 11.8% cumulative increase over early 2025. The tourism sector is rapidly outperforming pre-pandemic levels.
“Over 90% of all tourists originate from the African continent, with neighboring South Africa and Mozambique driving the bulk of regional arrivals.”
While overseas markets like the Middle East (surging over 50%) have seen impressive growth, traditional European and American source markets have faced declines due to global travel costs.
The average length of stay hovers between 2.3 and 2.6 nights, with ongoing efforts from the Eswatini Tourism Authority (ETA) focused on increasing visitor spending.
South Africa continues to be the primary anchor, contributing nearly 60,000 arrivals in key months.
Mozambique consistently ranks as the second-largest source market.
On the other hand, Malawi and Tanzania have shown explosive growth, indicating a diversifying African travel base.
