MBABANE — The Kingdom of Eswatini and the Republic of Chad are expected to formally establish diplomatic relations during the United Nations General Assembly taking place in New York this month.
The planned formalisation of relations was announced following engagements between the two countries at the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), where Eswatini and Chad agreed to establish formal diplomatic ties during the September UN General Assembly.
The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on September 8, 2026, with the high-level General Debate scheduled to begin on September 22.
The development would mark a significant step in strengthening Eswatini’s diplomatic relations with Chad and expanding bilateral engagement between the African kingdom and republic.
The agreement emerged during Eswatini’s participation in OACPS engagements in Brussels in July, where the two countries discussed strengthening their bilateral relationship.
Eswatini’s Embassy to the European Union reported that Chad had also pledged approximately US$1 million (about E16 million) to the OACPS during the engagements, while Eswatini and Chad agreed to formalise their diplomatic relations during the September UN General Assembly.
The formal establishment of diplomatic relations would provide a framework for the two countries to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including political, economic and multilateral affairs.
The move also comes as Chad continues to expand its diplomatic network. In July, the Bahamas announced that it had established diplomatic relations with Chad, reflecting N’Djamena’s continuing efforts to strengthen ties with other countries.
For Eswatini, the establishment of relations with Chad would add another bilateral partnership on the African continent and create opportunities for increased diplomatic engagement between the two governments.
The United Nations General Assembly, which brings together representatives of all UN member states, provides an important platform for countries to announce and formalise diplomatic and bilateral arrangements.
If completed as planned, the Eswatini-Chad agreement is expected to give fresh momentum to relations between the two countries, with further cooperation potentially developing through their respective foreign ministries and diplomatic missions.
