MBABANE – Eswatini has confirmed its growing economic partnership with the European Union as government leaders continue to push for stronger export markets, industrial growth and wider opportunities for local businesses.

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo yesterday met with Hilde Vautmans, Co-President of the Africa-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, during her visit to the country for the inaugural Africa-EU Parliamentary Assembly 2026.

The meeting highlighted Eswatini’s determination to deepen trade relations with the EU at a time when the kingdom continues to position itself as a competitive player in regional and international markets.

Khumalo said the country’s trade relationship with the EU remains anchored in the EU-SADC Economic Partnership Agreement, which this year marks its 10th anniversary. He noted that the EU continues to serve as Eswatini’s leading export destination for sugar, textiles and agricultural products, creating vital economic opportunities for local industries and farmers.

The discussions also focused on how Eswatini can leverage existing partnerships to strengthen value addition and industrialisation. Khumalo pointed to continued EU support through the International Trade Centre, which has assisted in developing agro-processing, supporting small and medium enterprises and opening access to European markets.

The minister said these initiatives were helping local businesses integrate into global value chains while boosting competitiveness and creating employment opportunities.

The engagement comes as Eswatini intensifies efforts to diversify its economy and expand exports beyond traditional sectors. Analysts believe stronger collaboration with international partners could accelerate growth for local entrepreneurs and manufacturers seeking access to global markets.

The meeting is described as a strong signal of confidence in Eswatini’s economic direction, particularly as the country continues to attract interest in agro-processing, manufacturing and trade development.

With global markets becoming increasingly competitive, government leaders say strategic international partnerships remain essential in unlocking investment, strengthening local industries and ensuring sustainable economic growth.

The Africa-EU Parliamentary Assembly is expected to further strengthen dialogue between African and European leaders on trade, development and economic cooperation.
