MBABANE— The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has commenced rehabilitation works along the MR1 corridor from Motshane Interchange to Lusekwaneni, targeting critical road failures in a move aimed at improving structural integrity, safety and overall ride quality along the strategic route.
The project focuses on restoring damaged sections of the roadway through phased rehabilitation of failed areas. According to the Ministry, the interventions include resurfacing worn-out pavement layers in critically affected zones with the application of new asphalt surfacing designed to restore pavement structure and enhance long-term durability.
In addition to resurfacing, the works will involve pothole patching as part of preventative maintenance efforts intended to curb further pavement deterioration. Officials indicated that these targeted restoration measures are essential to addressing structural failures that have affected parts of the corridor.
The MR1 is considered one of the country’s key transport arteries, connecting major economic and border points. Authorities said the rehabilitation programme is expected to significantly improve road safety for motorists and public transport operators while enhancing driving comfort and reducing vehicle wear and tear.
The Ministry emphasised that the upgrades form part of broader efforts to strengthen national transport infrastructure and support economic activity by ensuring efficient movement of goods and people.
Motorists travelling along the affected stretch have been advised to exercise caution when approaching work zones, adhere to temporary traffic control measures and cooperate with onsite personnel to ensure smooth and timely project execution.
The rehabilitation initiative reflects government’s continued commitment to maintaining critical infrastructure and improving road conditions across the country.
