LOBAMBA – The Ministry of Home Affairs has outlined a series of strengthened internal control measures aimed at curbing malpractice and safeguarding the integrity of its services.
This was revealed in the Report of the Portfolio Committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs, tabled in Parliament on March 27, 2026.
The Ministry was responding to concerns raised by Senator Isaac Magagula, who was the Acting Chairperson of the Committee. Magagula cautioned that arrests alone may not be a sustainable solution to addressing misconduct among officers, urging the Ministry to adopt more effective and preventative measures.
“Arrests, while necessary, may not fully address misconduct by officers. What methods is the Ministry putting in place to strengthen internal controls and curb malpractice?” he asked.
In response, the Ministry highlighted that it is implementing robust systems to enhance accountability and professionalism. These include the installation of surveillance cameras, the introduction of Standard Operating Procedures, and the review of the legal framework to ensure officers uphold integrity in the execution of their duties.
The Ministry further emphasised that these measures are aimed at creating a more transparent and efficient working environment while preventing misconduct before it occurs.
Addressing concerns over the security of national documents, particularly passports regarded as globally strong, Senator Magagula also sought clarity on how the Ministry is preventing illegal issuance.
In response, the Ministry assured the Committee that it is working closely with the Central Bank to ensure the safe keeping of all classified documents, strengthening security and minimising the risk of fraud.
The strengthened measures signal a deliberate shift towards proactive governance, where prevention, accountability, and the protection of national documents remain central to the Ministry’s efforts to uphold public trust and deliver secure, reliable services to emaSwati.
