MALKERNS – The African Alliance Partner S’thofeni Ginindza has officially announced that Mario Fernandes has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pick n Pay Eswatini, marking a new chapter for the retail giant.
Fernandes, a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in the retail sector, joined Pick n Pay in 2016 and has served as General Manager since 2018. He is expected to assume his new role in the first week of August.
The announcement was made today July 18, 2025 at LivPadel, Malkerns Square, where Ginindza also confirmed that Fernandes will lead not only Pick n Pay Eswatini but also its fast-growing divisions Pick n Pay Liquor, wholesale operations in Matsapha, and Pick n Pay Clothing stores.
Furthermore, the group is set to roll out a new concept, “Pick n Pay On the Go,” modelled after Pick n Pay Express in South Africa. These outlets, located at filling stations and high-traffic areas, are designed to offer convenient shopping options. The first store is set to open at Nkonyeni, alongside a KFC, with another already operating in Siteki Opened yesterday July 17,2025.

Reflecting on his appointment, Fernandes shared his journey from humble beginnings to becoming CEO, describing it as a milestone achieved through dedication, teamwork, and family support. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his loved ones and extended special thanks to Sanelisiwe Nhlabatsi, Akhona Dlamini, Ellena Mbeki, and Seddy Louw for their contributions to his career and the company’s success.
“When we acquired Pick n Pay Eswatini, there were only four branches in Mbabane, Manzini, and Matsapha,” Ginindza said. “Today, we have expanded to over ten branches and continue to grow” he added.
Ginindza emphasized that Emaswati should lead Pick n Pay Eswatini, “EmaSwati are talented, educated, and hardworking. What they need is empowerment,” he said.
He also underscored his philosophy of appointing one CEO to oversee all entities under the Lojaf Group, stating that the role of CEO is the first step to entrepreneurship. “An Entrepreneur must carry risk and responsibilities alone while CEO will hide and depend on the Board of Directors. But ultimately, they must lead with vision and accountability” he said
The appointment of Fernandes is widely seen as a bold and strategic move, reinforcing Pick n Pay Eswatini’s commitment to local leadership and sustainable growth
