MBABANE- Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has officially appointed and commissioned the Board that will spearhead the establishment of the SADC University of Transformation, marking a significant step in positioning Eswatini as a regional hub for innovation, research, and advanced learning.
The newly appointed Board will be chaired by Dr Simanga Alex Tsela, with Professor Innocent Msibi serving as Vice-Chairperson. Other members include Dr Rejoice Maseko, Zandile Dlamini, Mboni Dlamini, Victor Langa, and Welile Kunene.
The Board carries a critical national mandate to establish and oversee a comprehensive ecosystem that will enable Eswatini to successfully implement the university. This includes developing the necessary infrastructure, systems, and operational processes, as well as mobilising resources to ensure the institution becomes fully functional and sustainable.
In his address, Dlamini emphasized the importance of discipline, leadership, and national pride in executing this historic assignment.
“This is a responsibility of great national importance. You have been entrusted with bringing His Majesty the King’s vision to life. Uphold self-respect and respect for authority as you execute this mandate,” he said.
The PM challenged the Board to think boldly and act decisively in shaping a world-class institution that will elevate Eswatini’s global academic standing.
“Ensure this becomes the best university in Southern Africa, one that is recognised and endorsed by leading institutions globally. Begin developing the curriculum immediately so that ESHEC can initiate the accreditation process as soon as possible,” he said.
He further stressed the need to prioritise Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, while strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.
“You must prioritise STEM disciplines and ensure strong linkages between academia and industry. This institution must produce graduates who are relevant, innovative, and ready to drive economic transformation,” added the Prime Minister.
Responding on behalf of the Board, Chairperson Dr Simanga Alex Tsela expressed confidence in the team’s ability to deliver on its mandate, highlighting that groundwork is already in motion.
“We are honoured by the trust placed in us. The Board possesses the capability and competence required to deliver on this national assignment. Work on a comprehensive strategic plan is already underway and will be presented in the coming weeks,” said Dr Tsela.
He further underscored the importance of collective national support in ensuring the success of the university.
“We recognise this institution as a national asset. We will galvanise patriotism and collaboration across sectors to ensure its success and long-term impact,” he added.
The establishment of the SADC University of Transformation is expected to play a transformative role in advancing skills development, research, and innovation across the region, while reinforcing Eswatini’s commitment to education-driven economic growth and regional integration.
