LOBAMBA— The Rotary Club of Matsapha has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development through a strategic partnership with the Eswatini National Trust Commission for the Khabane Cave Walk initiative.
The launch event was graced by Her Royal Highness Princess Sakhizwe and the Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Honorable Jane Mkhonta Simelane, underscoring strong national support for the initiative.
Speaking during the launch, Rotary Club of Matsapha President Bahle Xaba highlighted that the collaboration goes beyond event coordination, describing it as a union of shared values focused on environmental protection, cultural preservation, and community empowerment.
Xaba emphasized that Rotary, a global service organization, has in recent years intensified its focus on environmental stewardship. This, she noted, stems from the understanding that human well-being is closely tied to the health of the environment. The Khabane Cave Walk, hosted within the ecologically rich Mlawula Nature Reserve, provides a practical platform to advance these goals.
She explained that the initiative is not only about promoting conservation awareness but also about encouraging responsible interaction with Eswatini’s natural heritage. Through guided exploration and environmental education, participants are expected to gain a deeper appreciation of the country’s biodiversity and landscapes.
Beyond environmental advocacy, Xaba highlighted the project’s potential to uplift rural communities. The initiative is designed to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities surrounding the reserve. These include roles for local tour guides, opportunities for small businesses, and platforms for cultural exhibitions and hospitality services.
“This is the essence of Rotary creating opportunities that are impactful, sustainable, and community-driven,” she said. Xaba further noted that the Khabane Cave Walk contributes to the promotion of Eswatini’s nature reserves as eco-tourism destinations. By showcasing the caves and the broader Mlawula landscape, the initiative strengthens the country’s positioning as a hub for cultural exploration and adventure tourism.
She described tourism as a key driver of economic growth when managed responsibly, adding that it can foster conservation efforts while instilling national pride. The partnership with the Eswatini National Trust Commission, she said, demonstrates the importance of collaboration in achieving long-term impact. By combining institutional expertise with community engagement and Rotary’s service network, the initiative is poised for sustainability.
Xaba concluded by urging stakeholders to continue working together to protect the environment, empower communities, and promote Eswatini’s heritage.
