GABORONE- The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Board of Auditors has started its audit of the SADC Secretariat for the 2025/2026 financial year beginning with a courtesy call on Executive Secretary Elias Mpedi Magosi on May 4, 2026.
The audit will review financial records and operations to strengthen transparency, accountability, and effective governance across the regional body. The Board plays a key role in protecting the integrity of SADC by examining financial statements and assessing how resources are managed.
This year’s audit team is led by Edwin Mpeni and includes 11 members from Malawi, Mauritius, and Seychelles. The findings will be presented to the SADC Council of Ministers, which oversees governance and decision-making within the Community.
“This audit will help strengthen governance systems and build confidence among Member States,” said Mpeni.
Magosi, accompanied by Judith Kateera, welcomed the auditors and pledged full support during the process. Mpeni expressed appreciation for the cooperation and said the Board would carry out a thorough and fair review.
The Board operates as SADC’s external audit body in line with Article 29 of the SADC Treaty and a 2005 Council resolution mandating Member States to audit SADC institutions. The Secretariat said the audit supports strong leadership, openness, and responsible use of resources.
Later, the auditors held a kick-off meeting with management to outline the audit scope and roadmap. The process is expected to strengthen regional cooperation and support continued progress in governance across SADC.
