MBABANE Rising Afro pop and hip hop artist Slash is preparing to release an emotional new single titled Gogo Wami, a heartfelt song inspired by his personal life struggles and the love of his grandmother.

The 24-year-old artist, whose real name is Lihle Shongwe, was born and raised in Othandweni under Siphofaneni. His life changed at a young age after the death of both his parents while he was still in primary school. Following the tragedy, Slash and his siblings were raised by their grandmother.

The artist shared that losing his parents at an early age deeply affected him emotionally and caused him to become rebellious during his school years. While attending Othandweni Primary School, he began misbehaving and skipping classes, although he managed to avoid drugs and other dangerous activities.

His musical journey started unexpectedly during an English class activity where learners were asked to sing or dance. Slash performed Kwesta’s hit song Do Like I Do and impressed both teachers and classmates with his talent. Many encouraged him to start writing his own music, believing he was naturally gifted.

As time went on, Slash regained focus in school and worked hard academically. He later attended Maphilingo High School after obtaining a first class pass in Grade 7.

Inspired by the pain he experienced and the sacrifices made by his grandmother, Slash wrote Gogo Wami as a token of appreciation. The song tells the story of grief, survival and gratitude while also highlighting the struggles faced by many children raised by grandparents.

The artist said he chose to sing in Siswati so that everyone, especially ordinary people in communities, could understand and relate to the message. Since its preview, many listeners have described the song as emotional and relatable, with some admitting it brought them to tears. The song was produced by King Kangaroo at Swazi Swag Records.

Meanwhile, Slash is also working on another song titled Ungabanaki featuring South African poetess Arorisoe Morena. The song encourages couples to ignore negativity from outsiders and focus on building strong relationships. Release dates for both songs are yet to be confirmed.
