MBABANE– One by one, staff members rolled up their sleeves, some smiling, others slightly anxious, as nurses checked blood pressure and sugar levels during a health screening exercise at the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development (MEPD). For many, it was a rare moment to pause and focus on their own wellbeing.

The screening, held in recognition of World Health Day, was part of the Ministry’s Staff Wellness Programme and aimed at helping employees understand their health before problems arise. Tests included blood pressure checks, blood sugar testing, BMI assessments and general health education.

For some employees, the experience was eye-opening. Simple checks turned into important conversations about lifestyle, stress and long-term health, highlighting how everyday habits can affect overall wellbeing.

According to information sourced from the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development Facebook page, the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to promote employee wellness and create a healthier working environment. The Ministry noted that prioritising staff health is essential for maintaining productivity and delivering efficient public service.

Beyond the tests, the exercise created a sense of care within the workplace. Staff were encouraged to take their health seriously, to go for regular check-ups and to make small but meaningful lifestyle changes.

The initiative also served as a reminder that behind every office desk is a person whose health matters. By bringing services closer to employees, the Ministry is helping remove barriers that often prevent people from seeking medical attention early.

As more institutions begin to invest in staff wellness, such efforts show that a healthy workforce is not just beneficial for individuals, but also essential for building a stronger and more effective public service.
