MBABANE – For three officers from Umvalo Wesive, the journey to New Delhi, India, is more than just an international training opportunity. It is a mission to return home better equipped to help protect emaSwati communities from the growing threats of disasters linked to climate change, floods, droughts and severe storms.
The officers were recently selected to participate in the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) course on Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management, an international programme aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and response systems. Before their departure, the officers met with the High Commissioner of India to Eswatini, His Excellency N. Ram Prasad, who encouraged them to make the most of the opportunity and proudly represent Eswatini during the training programme.
The training comes at a critical time for Eswatini, as the country continues to face increasing climate related challenges. According to the National Disaster Risk Management Authority (NDRMA), the institution’s mandate is to promote an integrated and coordinated system of disaster management focused on decreasing vulnerability and increasing preparedness and mitigation capacity. The Authority also emphasises the importance of strengthening early warning systems and building resilient communities capable of responding effectively to disasters.
Beyond classrooms and presentations in India, the programme carries a deeply human impact back home. Families living in flood prone areas, farmers battling recurring droughts and communities recovering from storms all stand to benefit from the knowledge the officers will bring back to Eswatini.
The NDRMA has increasingly shifted its focus toward prevention and resilience building rather than only responding after disasters occur. Following the devastation caused by Cyclone Eloise in 2021, the agency helped communities rebuild stronger homes and encouraged climate smart construction practices to reduce future risks.
Established in 2015, the NDRMA continues to play a central role in disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and rehabilitation across the country. The Authority says partnerships such as the ITEC programme remain vital in enhancing local expertise and ensuring the country remains prepared for future emergencies.
As the three officers prepare for their international assignment, they carry not only the hopes of their institution, but also the aspirations of communities that depend on stronger disaster management systems for safety, resilience and hope.
