MANZINI– Voters have been urged to make informed and independent decisions ahead of the upcoming by-election, with concerns raised over the distribution of food parcels during political activities.
Senior Elections Officer Nomvula Dlamini said voters should carefully consider issues surrounding the distribution of food parcels, particularly when such activities take place during the election period. Dlamini explained that while people can receive food parcels, concern arises when they are allegedly used to influence voters or encourage them to make particular political decisions.
She said this concern is especially relevant when food parcels are distributed around election-related activities, including nominations, political meetings and the primary election period. She noted that the issue becomes more concerning when food parcels are used to attract people or influence their support for particular candidates
The EBC further emphasised that voting is a right of every eligible Swazi citizen and person residing in Eswatini who meets the requirements to participate in elections. Voters are entitled to choose representatives who will serve as Members of the House of Assembly or as Bucopho.
Voters were reminded that they may vote only in the chiefdom, constituency or region where they are registered. An EBC member explained that elections for Bucopho and Members of Parliament are conducted through a secret ballot. The system is designed to protect the privacy of voters and ensure that each person can freely make their choice.
Votes are placed in sealed ballot boxes as part of measures aimed at maintaining a smooth, transparent and credible electoral process. Voters living with disabilities, as well as other citizens who require assistance, may be assisted in casting their ballots while maintaining the principles of secret voting. The voter education session also covered the nomination process. According to the EBC, nominations for candidates seeking to become Bucopho or Members of Parliament are conducted publicly and must be supported by at least 10 registered voters who are eligible to vote in the respective constituency.
Dlamini also highlighted the importance of the upcoming election, saying it will contribute to the opening of Parliament and provide voters with an opportunity to choose a representative who will serve and speak on their behalf. She further encouraged all eligible voters to participate, exercise their right to vote and choose representatives who will work for their communities and address the needs of the people.
