MANZINI – Graduation season is approaching, and for many students across Eswatini, the familiar sight of academic gowns and graduation caps signals the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
After months or even years of lectures, assignments, examinations and deadlines, graduates are preparing to trade their everyday campus clothes for the outfit that has become a symbol of achievement. But graduation is rarely just about the ceremony.
For families, it is often a day filled with pride, photographs and celebrations. Parents, siblings, relatives and friends gather to watch their graduate walk across the stage, collect a qualification and mark a moment that many have been waiting for.
The celebrations can also begin long before the graduation day itself. Social media timelines are expected to fill with graduation shoots, carefully chosen outfits, family photographs and messages congratulating the latest graduates.
For the graduates themselves, choosing what to wear for photographs has become part of the experience. Some may keep things simple and elegant, while others use their graduation shoot as an opportunity to show personality and personal style.
The graduation gown and cap may be the official outfit for the ceremony, but the celebrations often continue with a change of clothes for photographs, family gatherings or an evening out.
There is also the question of gifts. Flowers, personalised items, framed photographs and small keepsakes can all become meaningful ways for loved ones to celebrate the achievement.
Yet behind the photographs and celebrations is a bigger story. Graduation represents the result of persistence, sacrifice and countless moments when giving up may have seemed easier.
For some graduates, the next step will be employment. Others may continue with further studies, start businesses or take time to decide where their qualifications will lead them. That uncertainty is part of the journey.
As graduation season draws closer, campuses are preparing for a period of celebration that will see students take their final walk as graduates and families proudly watch from the audience.
