MBABANE– Eswatini has strengthened its position in regional health diplomacy as Minister for Health Hon. Mduduzi Matsebula, in his capacity as Chairperson of the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) Health Ministers Conference, hosts the 77th ECSA-HC Health Ministers Conference.
The high-level meeting was convened as a side event on the eve of the commencement of the 79th World Health Assembly, bringing together health ministers, senior government officials and health experts from across the East, Central and Southern Africa region to deliberated on pressing matters affecting public healthcare systems.
The conference focused on strengthening regional cooperation in healthcare delivery, improving health systems resilience and advancing collective strategies aimed at addressing both emerging and long-standing public health challenges confronting member states.
According to information released by the Ministry of Health’s Communication Department, the ECSA-HC Secretariat will use the conference to deliberate on several administrative and governance matters intended to strengthen the operations and effectiveness of the regional health body. Discussions are also expected to touch on collaborative programmes, financing mechanisms and strategies to improve healthcare access and service delivery across member countries.
One of the notable items on the agenda is the consideration of expressions of interest from two countries seeking admission into the ECSA-HC as member states. Should the applications be approved, the development would represent a significant expansion of the organisation’s regional reach and further strengthen cross-border cooperation in public health initiatives.
The hosting of the conference places Eswatini at the centre of important regional health discussions at a time when countries continue to prioritise stronger health systems following lessons learned from global health emergencies.
The ECSA-HC remains an important intergovernmental organisation that promotes regional cooperation in health, supports policy development and facilitates collaboration among member states to address shared healthcare priorities and improve health outcomes across the region.
